"The Buzz" student news report
 

Summary
 
The Buzz student news report is the result of a 5‐day film-making workshop undertaken with 9‐12 children from the Five Islands School on the Isles of Scilly.

The children were given the task of producing, presenting and editing a 5‐minute news report on energy  issues on the Isles of Scilly, within the wider context of environmental change.

During the workshop the children received help and tuition from two professional film-makers (Tom Tapper and Ben Meaker) from Nice and Serious Ltd. The completed short film will be premiered on 6th October 2009 at the Energy Saving Day (E-Day) event.
 

Aims
 
1. To produce a 5‐minute news report containing three main energy‐related stories
 
2. To teach the students basic film-making and reporting skills
 
3. To teach the students the basics of energy efficiency in the context of climate change

Roles
 
We divided the students so that they could fill three key roles.
 
Producers:

Producers play a crucial organizational role in film production. They are responsible for finding the story, helping the presenters and reporters to write and practice the script, finding a suitable interviewee and arranging a time and date for the interview.
 
News presenters / reporters:

News presenters and reporters are the public face of the news. They have to be confident and comfortable in front of the camera. They will be responsible for writing questions, conducting the interview and presenting to the camera.

 
Camera/sound person:

This person has to be both technically and artistically minded. They will have to operate the camera and sound equipment and make sure that that the picture looks good!
